A picture of
us Sandy girls
with our maternal
grandfather,
an immigrant
from Yugoslavia
who never
learned to
speak English
very well. |
Ellen came along as a
big surprise
to the Sandy family when I
was fifteen. The new baby never
wanted for attention. It was as if she
had four mothers instead of one.
Also pictured is Lynus
the dachshund.
(Not sure if it is Lynus I or Lynus II.)

I always had a fascination
with horses ever
since I can remember. Coming from a non-horsey
family didn't stop me from pursuing my dream.
I was determined to own a horse
and I knew one day I would.
I started saving my babysitting
money at
the age of twelve and by the time I was 14,
I had enough money ($150.00)
to buy my first horse, Cocoa.
I kept him at my friend's
house and hightailed
it over there everyday after school and spent
hours riding and exploring the rural areas and
farmlands of southern NJ.
We are pictured here
at a local show.
Since I didn't have a horse trailer or know anyone
who did, I rode him to the shows which were
a good distance away.
By the time we got there, we were both
cranky and tired.
Needless to say, we never
had much of a
show career, but we enjoyed
countless happy hours
together.
