January 17th, 2001 ~ Day 3
A Winter Watercolor Workshop with Monte Guynes
On Wednesday Afternoon We
Worked on Another
Painting on Illustration Board
After
our lunch break, we all started on our second painting of the
day.
Having gotten the general idea of the technique in the morning,
Monte
pushed our limits even more with this second piece.

Monte approached this piece
in the same manner as the previous one, adding some
unique twists to the formula. After the first washes were dry,
he completely covered the
painting with a non staining wash of cerulean blue and olive
green, leaving a few places
untouched, revealing the raw under painting. The illustration
board was held at a slight
angle to encourage the paint to run. Monte softened some edges
and left others alone
as he painted. When this second wash was complete, the board
was placed level and
edges were emphasized or softened using a variety of techniques
from his fingers to brush
to paper towels. Again the piece was left to dry completely.
Next a spray of water was applied
and blotted with paper towels, in select areas to add more variety
to the the piece.
When the painting was again completely dry, some finishing details
were added.
