January 15th, 2001 ~ Day 1
A Winter Watercolor Workshop with Monte Guynes
Monte Started Us Off Easy
On Monday
We began
at 9am with this full sheet wet-in-wet snow scene.
The paper was first wet on both sides to allow maximum time for
the soft blending of colors, which is the hallmark of the medium.
We all tried to keep up with Monte as he painted, lectured,
joked, and danced through each painting.
By noon, the first batch of paintings were critiqued and it was
evident that even though all 33 of us were painting basically
the
same thing, each painting was more diverse than the next.
There were quite a few accomplished artists in the group,
a large portion of intermediates and a few first timers as well.
After
an hour break, it was back at it, full steam ahead!
In the
afternoon, we did another loose wet-in-wet landscape.
This is a technique that has been very popular in Monte's work.
It was done
in a couple of my favorite colors, Utramarine Blue and Burnt
Sienna.
It was fast and fun. The way Monte likes to keep it. We finished
up the day
with another critique and it was remarkable to see everyone,
even the real beginners were doing very well.
