Tony van Hasselt's Maine Watercolor Workshop

Day 2

The Boat Yard

On Tuesday, Tony chose a dry docked fishing boat that was being refurbished at a local boatyard for our subject. It was a very complicated and confusing subject for most of us. Frustration ran high as I shuffled my painting gear from spot to spot, trying to get a better view, better lighting, better setting, more inspiation.

I think I moved at least four times. The final move was under Tony's direction, showing me how interesting the back end was. This is where I did my pattern sketch. After the pattern sketch, I just couldn't get it together to start my watercolor.

I as simply overwhelmed. I had ceased to see the subject in the correct frame of mind. It was time for a break. I put my gear in my car and went for a refreshing drive. I ended up back at the docks near the hotel where I did this pencil drawing of two of the many fishing boats there. That night, my hotel room turned into a studio where I did this finished painting.
