September 3rd ~ Internet Friendships
Today was a busy day. I had a meeting with friends at their horse farm to plan a media blitz on their property. It was a beautiful day and we got a lot accomplished. I was feeling really content before I came home to a house filled with the smell of a cooking disaster and baby wrens flying around Jerry's shop. O.K., Reality check! Now I'm sitting here wondering if online friendships / relationships are real. I ask this because a couple of my internet buddies have just up and vanished. I can't help wondering what happened. Of course, I've had some physical friends disappear lately too, so maybe it's normal. What do you think? Anyway, "Hey Bill611, are you still out there? I miss your thought sketches; and to you, Sheila Robinson; Did you ever finish your book?"

"Tell me what company thou keepest, and I'll tell thee what thou art." ~ Miguel de Cervantes

"The only way to have a friend is to be one." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"My father always used to say that when you die, if you've got five real friends, then you've had a great life." ~ Lee Iacocca

Today's shot is from my friend's farm today. This nice sandblasted sign was done by Carol's sister, Cheryl. Cheryl is a shop teacher and among many other accomplishments, is an artist and built her own house.

September 7th ~ Art And Necessity
All I know is that art is an essential part of my life and it seems it always has been. I need to create and I feel more in balance with life when I do. I've been painting with my colors again after a few months off during my summer Sketching Everyday. It's been fun working on this year's Jersey Devil collection. I finished up the larger piece this morning. Here's a shot taken real quick on my studio porch with my point and shoot. It shows the edges of the paper. Sometimes it's a shame to mat these and cover them up. Although you can't see it here, you can bet you'll be able to see lots of detail in my high resolution shots.
I posted this quote to my inspirational quote blog today and would be interested to hear your opinions."Art is a necessity an essential part of our enlightenment process. We cannot, as a civilized society, regard ourselves as being enlightened without the arts." ~ Ken Danby

September 10th ~ Series
I frequently tell folks that one painting just leads to another. Often working in sets or a series, I am better able to explore my creative options. Some enlightening discoveries are made along the way. Techniques and skills are solidified and refined through this repetitive process. Many times one piece will give birth to the next. Progressing this way keeps me asking "What if?".

"The benefit of a series is to draw an artist along on a purposeful voyage of discovery." ~ Robert Genn

"It is truly art when you repeat and let the changes flow that naturally happen." ~ Sherry J. Purvis

"A series is not necessarily a group of copycat works but a group of work that is cohesive and appears to belong together. As a well dressed person might assemble an outfit, one grouping (series) for formal wear, and a different one for casual. But in the end they both are a reflection of your style." ~ Sonja Donnelly

"Variations on a theme, however subtle, lead to development and refinement." ~ Robert Genn

September 14th ~ Halloween Series

Fall is my favorite time of year and I decorate for Halloween more than any other holiday. We don't get trick or treaters way out here in the pines, but things do get pretty spooky around here this time of year. I just finished this watercolor of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman. After seeing the Halloween art of Jennifer MacNeill and EHAG, I really got inspired . As I painted this, I paused periodically to watch the 1999 version of Sleepy Hollow, starring Johnny Depp as the New York detective sent to the town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of mysterious deaths where the victims were found beheaded. I think the scene with "the tree of death" is one of the scariest parts. It's a great movie and one of the few classics I can see over and over again year after year.

Thanks to everyone for their concern for my 29 year old fur baby, Rudy . He is doing great and looks better than he has in months.I will be posting photos, an update and  progress report on my web log shortly.

"Isn't life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?" ~ Andy Warhol

"Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward." ~ Henry Ford

September 17th ~ Thank-you
Last year I posted a color drawing of a Blue Morpho Butterfly to my Sketching Everyday Blog. Later that year, I was contacted by Laurie Sterner, from Sonoma, CA, about using the image as a logo for their First Annual Butterfly Ball . Just last week, I got a beautiful handmade thank you card with the butterfly on it from Laurie, the event coordinator. What a wonderful surprise it was! Her words touched my heart and made me proud and happy to have helped them raise over  $12,000 which went directly to the families of children living with cancer. My contribution was very small and seemed very insignificant, but it seems it had a big impact. During the year, I donate my art to many organizations and rarely get more than a verbal thank you, sometimes not even that. I do not expect anything in return, however it is always appreciated when my donation is at least acknowledged! I have never received so much thanks and recognition for so little. It makes me want to do even more for them next year. Thank you so much Laurie. Your thoughtfulness goes a long way and means more than you can know!

"Silent gratitude isn't very much use to anyone." ~ Anonymous

"He who receives a benefit with gratitude repays the first installment on his debt." ~ Seneca

"Always give without remembering and always receive without forgetting." ~ Brian Tracy

"Thank-you. Thank-you very much." ~ Elvis Presley

September 24th ~ Competence
The dictionary defines competence as being adequately qualified, capable or proficient. To become so in any art requires constant practice! Today's image is part of a series of cranberry harvest photos I'm working on. The beauty of digital photography is that if they don't turn out to my liking, I can correct them in post processing, discard them and move on to the next or go back and shoot some more. Hopefully, I have learned something from the previous attempt. I hope to never lose the desire to keep striving to learn new things and become more competent in various mediums.

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the nature of the task has changed, but our ability to do has increased." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A good photograph is not just a demonstration of steady hand and a good eye. It must offer a feeling of homage to the subject." ~ Keith Shackleton

"The future belongs to the competent. It belongs to those who are very, very good at what they do. It does not belong to the well meaning." ~ Brian Tracy
