January 31st, 2008 ~ Make A Difference
/ Wolf
Sometimes we can make a big difference
by doing something very small,
like donating $10.00 today. A Place To Bark is involved in a
contest
to win a grant of $50,000 to build a no kill dog and cat rescue
center and
nation wide placement service. All they need to win is the most
people,
not the most money to donate to their cause. Only the top four
US entries
will win the money and the competition is neck and neck at this
point. The
contest ends today, Thursday, January 31st at 3:00 pm Eastern
Standard
Time! Please go to: http://www.aplacetobark.com
and pledge your $10.00 before it's too late and then help spread
the word!

Quotations on Making A Difference:
"It's easy to make a buck. It's
a lot tougher to make a difference."
~ Tom Brokaw
"We must not, in trying to think
about how we can make a big difference,
ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time,
add up
to big differences." ~ Marian Wright Edelman
"How wonderful it is that nobody
need wait a single moment before
starting to improve the world. " ~ Anne Frank
"Act as if what you do makes
a difference. It does." ~ William James

January 28th, 2008 ~ Suggestions
/ Big Horn Sheep
I got a fair amount of feedback about
my untitled painting that I posted on
Thursday. It gives me a good feeling to know that my art is engaging
enough
that people feel inclined to comment and make suggestions. Many
thanks to
everyone who took the time to offer me their ideas. I really
loved them all. It
was a close call, but Mountain Majesty and Sandy's story
gave me chills!

Suggestions
from members:
"A suggestion for today's painting
might be; Nimble of Spirit."
~ Maureen Horan, New Hope, PA
"Here's my spirit talking; how
about Boundless Guide. I'm not sure it
suits the secondary figure that is grazing however. I get a solitary
feeling
from it; Solitary Sentinel". ~ Joyce Koontz, Medford,
NJ
"Just thought I would let you
know that the minute I opened the picture the word
Majestic came into my head." ~ Lee Gates, Tabernacle,
NJ
"The Big Horn sheep live not
far from me, and I have seen them from time to
time. I like to think of them as mountain royalty, as they conquer
the toughest
terrain on a daily basis. I consider the Big Horn Range and the
Wind River
Range (their habitat, here) the halls of these royals, thus,
I think your new
watercolor would be titled quite well, if called; Mountain
Majesty."
~ Sandra Larimore, Casper, Wyoming

~ 7.5" x 5.5" original watercolor, $149.00

January 24th, 2008 ~ Flexibility
/ Big Horn Sheep
In this extremely fast pace world,
we all need to stay flexible. More than
at any other time on earth, things are changing at an amazing
rate. We can all
learn a lesson from the symbolism of the mountain sheep. Its
special attributes
include a thick coat that repels the elements, suction like soles
that cling and an
elastic frame that allows it to absorb shocks and do things impossible
to others.

Quotations on Flexibility:
"Men are born soft and supple;
dead, they are stiff and hard.
Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and
dry.
Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death.
Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard
and
stiff will be broken. The soft and supple will prevail."
~ Lao Tzu
"God turns you from one feeling to another and teaches by
means of opposites,
so that you will have two wings to fly, not one." ~ Mevlana
Rumi

January 21st, 2008 ~ Opportunity
/ Goldfinch
There has been a constant flurry of
activity at our bird feeders. A variety of finches
dominate the scene. One of my favorites is the Goldfinch. Its
flamboyant ensemble
is now a subdued yellow hue, however the symbolism of this bird
and its color
remind me that creativity and joy are ever present. This species
often feeds upside
down, which indicates a knack for versatility and extracting
all from opportunity.
====<<>>====
Quotations on Opportunity:
"The optimist sees opportunity
in every danger; the pessimist sees danger in
every opportunity." ~ Winston Churchill
"Seize opportunity by the beard, for it is bald behind."
~ Bulgarian proverb
"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed
in overalls
and looks like work." ~ Thomas Edison

January 17th, 2008 ~ Joy / Hummingbirds
Yesterday I enjoyed talking to a group
of nearly forty nature enthusiasts at a monthly
garden club meeting. What a pleasure it was for me to share my
stories and my work!
Earlier in the week, while looking on the web for hummingbird
poems, I came across
a special one by Doug E. Barr. With his permission and with joyful
gratitude, I am
posting it on my new
Hummingbird Pages with a link to his wonderful writing.

Quotations on Joy:
"Enjoy the little things, for
one day you may look back and realize
they were the big things." ~ Robert Brault
"Joy is the feeling of grinning
on the inside." ~ Dr. Melba Colgrove
"All real works of art look as
though they were done in joy." ~ Robert Henri

January 14th, 2008 ~ Enthusiasm
/ Hummingbirds
As far back as I can remember, I've
always been an animal lover.
Everyone who knows me will agree, if there's one bird species
I'm most
enthusiastic about, it's my friends, the tiny hummingbirds. This
Wednesday
I'm giving a slide show presentation about hummingbirds and discussing
my
Animal Spirits Book for the local Medford Lakes Garden Club.
I can't wait
to share my observations and insights on some of my favorite
subjects!
See my new Hummingbird Pages on www.sandysandy.com!

Quotations on Enthusiasm:
"Art cannot single-handedly create
enthusiasm. It merely contributes to
enthusiasm and guides us to be more conscious of feelings that
we might
previously have experienced only tentatively or hurriedly."
~ Alain de Botton
"One man has enthusiasm for 30
minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the
man who has it for 30 years who makes a success of his life."
~ Edward B. Butler
"Enthusiasm is not an emotional
state. It is a spiritual commitment, a loving
surrender to our creative process. Enthusiasm - from the Greek,
"filled with God",
is an ongoing energy supply tapped into the flow of life itself."
~ Julia Cameron

January 10th, 2008 ~ Evolution
/ Owl
Life is change. We are always evolving.
Our work, our culture
and our play reflects this change. I believe the magic of the
arts
can inspire people to take the high road. Artistic appreciation
is
one avenue which can help society become more highly evolved.
====<<>>====
Quotations on Evolution:
"Every artist must evolve from
what he has been taught to what
he can call his own true style." ~ Hap Hagood
"We're not done. We're still
evolving as a species. And who better
to be on the cutting edge than the practicing artist?" ~
Charly Hansen
"I let the evolution of my art
guide my journey, one painting
bravely leading me to the next." ~ Sandy Sandy

January 7th, 2008 ~ More Drawing
/ Snowshoe Hare
Where does a drawing end and a painting
begin? Here's another
sketch done on watercolor paper. This one looks more like a
monotone painting, however my attitude while doing it was
freer, like when I'm sketching. Color does add complexity.
====<<>>====
Quotations by Robert Henri from his
wonderful book,
"The Art Spirit", on Drawing:
"Realize that a drawing is not
a copy. It is a construction in very
different materials. A drawing is an invention." ~ Robert
Henri
"Drawing is not following a line
on the model, it is drawing your sense
of the thing." ~ Robert Henri
"The sketch hunter moves through
life as he finds it, not passing
negligently the things he loves, but stopping to know them, and
to note
them down in the shorthand of his sketchbook." ~ Robert
Henri
"Keep a bad drawing until by
study you have found out why it is bad."
~ Robert Henri

January 3rd, 2008 ~ Drawing /
Snowshoe Hare
Last week, while googling some images
of the Snowshoe Hare, I was
pleasantly surprised when I came across a wide selection of my
own animal sketches
taken from my Drawing Everyday Blog. They got me thinking of
how much I enjoy
this method of sketching with pencil and watercolor! After perusing
them, I decided
to add some drawings on quality watercolor paper to my inventory
of artwork.

Some quotations on Drawing:
"What do drawings mean to me?
I really don't know. The activity absorbs
me. I forget everything else in a way that I don't think happens
with any
other activity." ~ John Berger
"Drawing is the honesty of the
art. There is no possibility of cheating.
It is either good or bad." ~ Salvador Dali
"Make a drawing, begin it again,
trace it; begin it again and trace
it again." ~ Edgar Degas
