February 26th, 2007 ~ Exploration / Lady Slipper
Dear Friends ~
I did some exploring into the realm of oil painting this past weekend. It's a form
of mind flexing. By switching to a 'foreign' medium, I've challenged my skills
and my vision. In art, as in life, I think successful achievements depend, in part,
on one's ability to embrace personal development through continual exploration.

===<<>>===

Here are some quotes on Exploration:

"I obliged myself to explore where I might otherwise not have. And that's what
'mind flexing' is all about. It's making those brain-muscles work so that you feel
empowered to pursue your own vision." (Tony Smibert)

"The human mind can dream up far more interesting things than even mother nature.
Explore the infinite. Make your next painting your own." (Scott Pynn)

"An artist has to be a little like Lewis and Clark, always exploring in new,
uncharted directions." (C. W. Mundy)

"You can accelerate your development by giving yourself a fresh set of challenges,
or the same set viewed from a different angle, every day. Explore a different path;
if it's a dead end, explore another." (Paul Foxton)

"In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of
exploration." (Ansel Adams)

Exploration and experimentation leads to new discoveries. Often, I find that a so called
"mistake" or risk can lead to an exciting new approach. After all isn't creativity often the
use of an unexpected outcome that you make work out and the piece is more interesting
and exciting as a result. Sometimes that happens and the effect can be wondrous."

February 22nd, 2007 ~ Perseverance / Night Fishing
Dear Friends ~
For someone to be successful in just about any endeavor, one must have
perseverance. It is as true in the arts as it is in business and personal relationships.
One of my mentors, watercolorist Frank Webb, said, " People who study painting,
especially in the early years of learning their craft, must be willing to undergo long
periods of despair. They may find that they are impatient of slow growth. They must
be willing to persevere, as it takes many years and acres of paper to make a painter."

===<<>>===

Here are some quotes on Perseverance:

"Painting's always a challenge. Sometimes my brush sings its wonderful song,
sometimes I wade through quicksand, but always I persevere in gratitude."
(Julie Nilsson)

"Victory belongs to the most persevering." (Napoleon Bonaparte)

"I hold to the doctrine that with ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance,
all things are attainable." (Thomas Buxton)

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people
who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all." (Dale Carnegie)

"For any artist to persevere, they must have an enthusiastic audience of at least one."
(Stuart Davis)

February 19th, 2007 ~ Age / Old Shack
DDear Friends,
This past weekend, I celebrated another birthday. Of course I have
mixed emotions about getting to be another year older. Although it's
just a number, it is hard to ignore the physical signs of aging. However,
even in middle age, I find my spirit is still dominantly young and playful.
I'm pretty sure that no matter how old I get, I'll never willingly give up my
enthusiasm for life or my cherished membership in the Peter Pan Club. I
may grow old, but like Peter, will continue to refuse to grow up!

===<<>>===

Some quotations on Age:

"A man is not old as long as he is seeking something." ~ Jean Rostand

"Age is a matter of feeling, not of years." ~ George William Curtis

"The woman who tells her age is either too young to have anything to lose
or too old to have anything to gain." ~ Chinese Proverb

"Age does not depend upon years, but upon temperament and health.
Some men are born old, and some never grow so." ~ Tryon Edwards

"If wrinkles must be written upon our brows, let them not be written
upon the heart. The spirit should never grow old. " ~ James A. Garfield

"Deteriorating shacks evoke a sense of nostalgia of a simpler time, soon to
disappear without a trace. To me, the old buildings have a character
and soul. As they return to the earth, they remind us
of ever fleeting time and of our own mortality." ~ Sandy Sandy

DearDear Friends ~
I live on the edge of a State Forest and my yard is a refuge for
all kinds of animals. The local deer and turkeys find "The Sandarosa"
a safe haven in their often dangerous world. For almost six months out
of the year, we are blessed with a large colony of hummingbirds. They
trust us and feel at ease here. I never tire of watching them. This time
of year, I really miss having that delightful spirit around me.

===<<>>===

Here are more quotes you can share with your Valentines on Love:

In the arts, as in life, everything is possible provided it is based on love.
(Marc Chagall)

The only thing we never get enough of is love; and the only thing we never give
enough of is love. (Henry Miller)

If we all discovered that we only had five minutes left to say all that we wanted
to say, every telephone would be occupied by people calling other people to tell
them that they loved them. (Christopher Morley)

For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my
lips you kissed, but my soul. (Judy Garland)

February 8th, 2007 ~ Love / Hummingbirds
Dear Friends ~
It's almost that time of year again when my thoughts turn to the message of Valentine's Day.
I think it's great that we celebrate a day of love! So often we take things, people and relationships
for granted. By expressing love, we attract more of it. So lets all make a conscious effort to be
more loving, considerate and positive! Not only on Valentine's Day, but from this day forward.

Today I thought you'd enjoy some quotes on Love:

"All you need in the world is love and laughter. That's all anybody needs.
To have love in one hand and laughter in the other." (August Wilson)

"One's art goes as far and as deep as one's love goes." (Andrew Wyeth)

"People think love is an emotion. Love is good sense." (Ken Kesey)

"Love the moment, and the energy of that moment will spread
beyond all boundaries." (Corita Kent)

February 5th, 2007 ~ Inspiration / Deer
Dear Friends ~
At our art show this past weekend, one of the most frequently asked questions was "Where
do you get your inspiration?". As I explained, one painting often leads me to another. I must
also always remain open to nature's spirit, as my muse is often sparked by fleeting moments of
her drama and majesty. The way the sun glistens off of the feathers of a turkey, the contrast of Mr.
Cardinal against the gray of winter, or the sound of two jousting bucks as their racks connect. To me,
these are some of life's highest moments, when I feel spiritually connected and artisticlly inspired.

Today I thought you might enjoy some quotes on Inspiration:

"I'm not inspired every day I go to the studio, but you've got to push yourself. Do it every day
and once in a while things will really click. That's the biggest high you can imagine." (Jamie Wyeth)

"It's all about being present and doing the work with full consciousness. Ideas and inspiration,
past, present and future are mingled together in the work of the artist." (Linda Saccoccio)

"One need not travel the world for inspiration. If one is receptive it meets them on the way." (Sandy Sandy)

"Inspiration comes in many forms. Often it's most powerful when it catches you by surprise." (unknown)

"Aho! I found todays letter to be inspiration in it's self! It's always nice to hear of other people
who see the same things as I do. Often these things you write of are considered the provenance of
distracted people, or the stuff of dreamers wasting their time. I'm sure the world would be a better place
if more people could see these things as you do. The beauty of a fabulous sunrise or sunset, or a lightening
storm. How about the drops of water dripping off a water bird's beak and spreading ripples outward in a
still pond. And .....it's all FREE!!! You don't have to go to the movies or take some incredible vacation. You
just have to open your eyes and your mind. Thanks once again for sharing." ~ Lou Bergdoll

February 1st, 2007 ~ Dreams / Groundhog
Dear Friends ~
Happy Groundhog Day! The following text is from my Animal Spirits Book on the
symbolism of today's mascot. Groundhog is actually a type of marmot and along with
chipmunks and prairie dogs, they are members of the squirrel family. Since the groundhog
goes into true hibernation where its respiration may slow to one breath every six minutes,
it can teach us much about the mystery of metabolism and altered states of consciousness.
It is said that groundhog can help us to better tune into, remember and interpret our dreams,
offering guidance in our waking hours.

=====<<<>>>=====

Today I'm posting some quotes on Dreams:

"Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise
of what you shall one day be." (James Allen)

"It may be that those who do most, dream most." (Stephen Leacock)

"Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every
night of our lives." (Charles William Dement)

"Both dreams and myths are important communications from ourselves to ourselves. We
miss a great deal if we do not understand the language in which they are written." (Erich Fromm)

"Looking at the stars always makes me dream." (Vincent Van Gogh)

Today's image of the groundhog is from my book;
"An Awakening to the Presence of Animal Spirits".
