Philosophy:

My current Spirit Art collection is united by design, color selection and gestural momentum. In an attempt to interpret and express the spirit of my subject, I try to go beyond blind representsation and invite the viewer to connect on a deeper, more emotional level. Animal lovers especially seem to find my art and writing insightful, imparting considerable personal healing and power.

When I paint, I need to consider my audience as well as the medium. I strive to entertain the viewer visually, intellectually and emotionally. Through the use of compositional integrity, craftsmanship and a little audacity, my paintings do stand out. They provide a soothing and enduring oasis for many. By leaving out nonessential elements, I encourage people to get involved and use their own imagination. I've found that when viewers fill in the details and complete the story, it often produces lasting impressions. Ultimately, it can trigger a feeling of joy or give one a sense of the amplitude of some of life's highest moments.

Technique:

I usually start with a small layout sketch. A refined focal point drawing is later transferred to my paper. The majority of my paintings are started by wetting both sides of my 140lb. handmade cotton paper and painting wet on wet or dry on wet. This allows exuberant, loose background strokes to blend and mingle like only transparent watercolor can. As the paper dries, I tighten up and work on my center of interest and details, completing the piece, wet on dry.
